Obisugi Japanese cedar once supported Nichinan City’s economy and vitality. However, when the demand for wooden ships disappeared, Obisugi forestry declined quickly, and the mountains today are covered with Obisugi trees left by earlier generations. When sugi cedars became less popular, it seemed to lead to a decline in care and passion for the region. Under the circumstances, the local government (Nichinan City Obisugi cedar section) has moved to revive Obisugi cedar once more. Hereafter, the hope is to cover not only the mountains but also streets and homes with sugi cedar, a goal that has led to creating the furniture product line obisugi design to promote Obisugi. The products are new, but nostalgic cedar furniture that uses the characteristics of Obisugi as is: they are fast growing and the wood is soft, plain and simple. The wood is processed only as much as necessary and the feeling of "fullness" of the material is utilized.
