For over 40 years since 1970 (Showa 45), the road has been reserved for pedestrian-only use through so that shoppers can enjoy strolling Ginza's shopping street in safety and comfort. The scheme has been continued through the public-private cooperation of the Tsukiji Police Station and Ginza Street Association, with the former adjusting the traffic lights and making sure that safety is secured, and the latter, putting put barricades to keep vehicles out and parasols and benches to provide visitors a place to seek rest as well as patrolling.
