The MS structure uses wood from the Miya River basin, and the ratio of the wood produced in Mie on average accounts for 74% of the total. The cutting, lumbering and processing are done at a third-sector factory consisting of the forestry cooperative and Odai Town, and most employees are residents of the basin. Local carpenters with knowledge of traditional techniques in timber processing are employed, and traditional methods to integrate crosspieces are provided as well as regular precutting processing. After clear cutting, activities to regain the original ecosystem are conducted by planting regional seedlings to restore the mountain, prevent disasters, and avoid the ecological destruction and disturbance of genes. Additionally, a new forest economy including tourism, fuel sources and industrial materials will be created. The MS structure makes use of local forest resources, protects employment and traditional culture, and recovers the ecosystem. It also provides comfortable houses suited to the climate and natural features of Mie with a high degree of efficiency and traceability.
