Aired in 1979, the first show of Mobile Suit Gundam was based on realistic depictions of war featuring the use of robots as weapons called “mobile suits,” extensive and careful scientific investigation such as the “space colony,” and complex human drama. As a result of these features, Mobile Suit Gundam started a huge trend by establishing a new genre called Real Robot Animation in contrast to conventional robot animation series that were mostly simple stories of rewarding the good and punishing the evil. Since then, new series have been made by reflecting circumstances of the times. At present, cumulatively 20 TV series, 16 movies, and 26 OVA and other works have been made.
