No organization has ever aggregated route bus data (timetables, routes, and bus stops) from all 515 bus operators in Japan, because of the complexity and variety of data (both analogue and digital) resulting in too much work to convert into a single database. However, after 11 years (since March 2006) of negotiations and steady efforts to develop a scheme to unify the data, a database that covers 100% of all route buses in Japan has finally been created. This database is utilized in a smartphone application, which allows bus passengers to search through timetables, routes, and bus stop locations for all route bus operators, greatly enhancing travel by bus. Furthermore, bus operators do not need to arrange their existing data; therefore, eliminating any extra workload.
