Park Island Residential Apartment

1/6

The couple’s key reason for buying this brand new apartment in a restricted-access residential area was to build a sanctuary, an escape from the busy world outside. Although this apartment was not a converted industrial space in an artsy neighborhood (as a loft in say New York City would be), the desire for an open, unbound space was shared by the owner. By knocking down the walls to all three bedrooms (we left in the ones for the kitchen and guest bathroom), we created a loft space that allowed the eyes to run down the whole 37-foot long apartment - a big difference from the original 11 feet of visibility wall-to-wall. We also captured wholly the stunning view of Hong Kong’s longest suspension bridge, Tsing Ma Bridge, through the balcony doors that ran the full length of the apartment. One of the few things the couple had a lot of were books. We installed two rows of bookshelves in the apartment - not only because they could serve as storage space, but also because they were the perfect partitions to delineate out a living area, working area, and bedroom. Shelves not filled up completely would allow light to come through from the next room, charging the apartment with a natural brightness.
