The designed building is altogether dynamic and static: the dynamism is generated through the movement of the blocks while the rectangular and sober shape gives the building a static foundation. The idea behind the Riyadh Park Inn Hotel originated from the concept of blocks, where from one item a module is created which comes back together to form a series of variations and alternatives, minimizing waste and creating a well knit and unified whole. The same method is applied in construction wood stacking, where one can keep on generating new variations. The proposed hotel lies as a large dynamic element radiating light from the elongated slim slits of its façade and breaking up to expose its central spine, the atrium, defining the entrance and the common spaces of the hotel. Inspired by the design of the Muqarnas (reminiscent of stalactites) in traditional Arabic architecture, the internal vertically zigzagging atrium plays the role of a courtyard and allows for continuous ventilation along the building while creating a human hub for interaction and public activities. The design investigates the relationship between mass and void, creating a sense of privacy where little exposure of the hotel’s internal private activities are reflected to the outside. They seem to be protected by the large mass of stone that buffers inside and outside. Designed according to functional and sustainable requirements, the building offers narrow and deep perforate openings provide natural light while reducing heat absorption and thus energy consumption. The building’s reading is one very much related to the local architectural language of mass and stone. It blocks the views from the outside and protects from the harsh climate thus generating a safe temperate internal space. A differentiation between the reading of the building’s base and body reflects the buildings internal functions and the intricate treatments of the facades show a sensitivity to exposure, light and the play on the different modules.
